The Nursing Necklace

Last spring Rob and I went to a Craft Fair in Brooklyn - don't remember which one at the moment. We went to visit and support my friends at Goose Grease. I bought this bead kit, and finally took a picture of the finished project.

There are all kinds of nursing necklaces for sale. I like these because once I'm done with them, they can go in the toy box. I'm surprised at the number of compliments I get on this though when I wear them out. They are perfect for Simon to tug and chew on when I'm wearing or feeding him. Otherwise he likes to claw at my face and pull hair. I can wear my hair down!

I have a couple of other necklaces with big beads that I know Simon can't break, but I kind of love these.

Crafting: Stockings

Thanks to Pinterest I have all these great ideas for crafting.  We didn't have nice stockings and I've not been able to find any that I like.  Then I saw this great tutorial to make your own.  So I did.

I kind of love them, and it reminded me how much I like sewing.  I was able to make these in two evenings.  And there is enough left over fabric that I think I will make some matching gift bags.

Baby in the Mirror

I have a lot of things I would like to have time to do.  Like start sewing Simon's quilt that Mom and my sister-in-law cut all the pieces for over the summer.  But Simon is time consuming and I barely have time to get school work done,  I'm in a constant state of "I'm going to get fired" except it's school and they don't fire you.

And I'm far from being so behind as to get kicked out. So for my hoby time I mostly stick with blogging, sometimes one-handed while Simon eats.

But last week the hot glue gun was out from our Halloween costume extravaganza.  So, I did find the time to do a project that has been in my brain for some time.  While watching NCIS: LA because I'm a multi-tasker.

Simon really loves to play with the baby in the mirror.  And ever since I went with the "not a common baby theme" nursery decor, it's hard to match.  I've been wanting to get a crib mirror, but I didn't want treetop friends or farm animals, or Disney characters, I wanted ROBOTS.

So I bought some felt and a piece of orange foam at Michael's, and Rob found me a square plastic mirror at one of the art stores.  It's not a flex material like I would find in a ready made crib mirror, but it is plastic so I'm making do.

These materials have been moved around our apartment for the last couple of months.  Last week I started cutting robot parts, and letters, and shapes.  I glued the felt on to the foam frame.

I used the half for a back that was about an inch bigger than the mirror all around.  The front frame overlaps a quarter inch all around so there are no sharp edges available.

Some felt ties and a few minor glue burns and now Simon can play with the baby in the mirror whenever he wakes up. I love how this turned out.

I really like being crafty, there just aren't enough hours in the day right now.

Baby Arts & Crafts

So, I think I'm turning into the Mommyblogger I never thought I would.  But really baby is more exciting than anything else going on.  And while we have nice days now and then it's still to cold for our city walks.

We found out Simon was a boy just before Valentine's Day.  This is a holiday we don't really celebrate (I have made it clear we don't need to do gifts etc., I am ok with this, Rob is ok with this, you should be ok with this for us too) but Rob thought it would be fun to paint onesies for baby.  We picked up some plain white newborn size (still wondering if I should have gone with the 0-3 month size) onesies at Babies 'R Us on sale for $2.99 and fabric paint at Michaels.

Rob ended up having a work thing on Valentine's Day (I told him to go and we'd reschedule painting, again we don't really celebrate the day) so we didn't paint until last Saturday night.

See what fun we had.

Yes, I'm wearing a smock.  It's in my best interest.

And the finished project.  We are going to have the best dressed baby.  For the first week until he outgrows these anyway.

Rob painted, I'm showing it off.

Old Navy had these shoes on clearance, I couldn't resist.

I painted.

We painted together.  Inside joke.

Rob painted.

I painted.

Being Crafty

I started sewing with my sewing machine last year. I decided to make a baby blanket for Charlie Pierce, Sara's baby. It's a really soft blue, yellow cotton, and denim. I think it turned out pretty cute. And since Charlie surprised us (no one more than his parents I'm sure) and arrived a month early - what was supposed to be a shower present is now a welcome baby present.

We love you Dave, Sara, and Charlie. Welcome to the world.
And oh yeah, I really like my sewing machine.

Tulle and Tutus

I saw this on Small Notebook last year. I want to find new hobbies that do not involve looking at a screen so I dabble in sewing and crocheting. This tutu had been in the back of my mind and as a no-sew project it's perfect fora quick fix of letting the creative juices flow. I made one in January for Chole's birthday, and just last week I made this one for Asiya, who I can't believe is TWO! I had Little Bill try it one as a test (and for a blog picture)

I think every little girl needs a tutu.

ps - Isn't my husband the cutest?
